You’ve Got Mail #21

Dear Jahar,

When we are really up against it, when life has us in a corner, when the pressure is almost more than we can bear – that is usually when our true self comes out.

I’ve known for a long time now about how you once saved a young man’s life in prison. I was not surprised at all to learn of this.

The gratitude and affection he feels for you is well-deserved, of that I have no doubt. Nor do I doubt that God saw your kindness toward him, kindness that sprang from the good heart that is still in you despite all that evil men and women have done to try to remove it and convince others that no genuine goodness ever existed there.

But I know better, as do many others. You are not a monster. You were never capable of the heinous acts for which you have been wrongly condemned. The Dzhokhar Tsarnaev who talked his fellow inmate back from the brink of despair could not and would not ever cause terrible harm such as you were accused of causing at the marathon.

The God who put that heart of kindness and concern for others inside you is the same God who is protecting your heart, mind and spirit from the brutality of prison life. One day you will emerge from behind those walls, never to return, your name having been cleared by a court of law.

That will be a day of great rejoicing for many. No need to tell you that!

I am ending this letter with a song, trying in my own fumbling way, to offer you words of comfort and hope like those you so selflessly gave another in his time of desperation. I pray you will receive them, and hold them close.

I know miracles are happening inside those prison walls, Dzhokhar. I am not surprised in the least that you have been instrumental in at least one of them.

With much love,

Lynn

THE FINGERPRINTS OF GOD   by: Steven Curtis Chapman

I CAN SEE THE TEARS FILLING YOUR EYES

AND I KNOW WHERE THEY’RE COMING FROM

THEY’RE COMING FROM A HEART THAT’S BROKEN IN TWO

BY WHAT YOU DON’T SEE

THE PERSON IN THE MIRROR DOESN’T LOOK LIKE THE MAGAZINE

OH BUT WHEN I LOOK AT YOU IT’S CLEAR TO ME

THAT I CAN SEE THE FINGERPRINTS OF GOD WHEN I LOOK AT YOU

I CAN SEE THE FINGERPRINTS OF GOD AND I KNOW IT’S TRUE

YOU’RE A MASTERPIECE THAT ALL CREATION QUIETLY APPLAUDS

AND YOU’RE COVERED WITH THE FINGERPRINTS OF GOD

NEVER HAS THERE BEEN, NEVER AGAIN, WILL THERE BE ANOTHER YOU

FASHIONED BY GOD’S HAND, PERFECTLY PLANNED TO BE JUST WHO YOU ARE

WHAT HE’S BEEN CREATING, SINCE THE FIRST BEAT OF YOUR HEART,

IS A LIVING, BREATHING, PRICELESS WORK OF ART

AND I CAN SEE THE FINGERPRINTS OF GOD WHEN I LOOK AT YOU

I CAN SEE THE FINGERPRINTS OF GOD AND I KNOW IT’S TRUE

YOU’RE A MASTERPIECE THAT ALL CREATION QUIETLY APPLAUDS

AND YOU’RE COVERED WITH THE FINGERPRINTS OF GOD

JUST LOOK AT YOU – YOU’RE A WONDER IN THE MAKING

OH AND GOD’S NOT THROUGH, NO

IN FACT, HE’S JUST GETTING STARTED…

  1. All so true Lynn. Dzhokhar always had a kind and compassionate heart, and that is something that man cannot take from you. It makes sense that Dzhokhar would help someone where ever he is, even in ADX. Beautiful letter.
